देहरादून स्थित वन अनुसंधान संस्थान की वानिकी के क्षेत्र में एक विशिष्ट पहचान है, सन 1864 में भारत के प्रथम वन महा निरीक्षक डा. डीट्रीच ब्रैंडिस की नियुक्ति की गई थी ,उनकी सलाह पर 1878 में देहरादून में देश के प्रथम वन महाविद्यालय की स्थापना की गई। 1884 में इसका नाम इंपीरियल फॉरेस्ट स्कूल रखा गया इस स्कूल को 1906 में अनुसंधान कार्य के साथ जोड़ते हुए इसका नया नामकरण किया गया इसका नाम इंपीरियल फॉरेस्ट रिसर्च इंस्टीट्यूट रखा गया संस्थान के बढ़ते कार्य के कारण 1914 में इसे चांद बाग के 47 एकड़ में कार्यालय एवं प्रयोगशाला बनाकर स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया। वर्तमान में f.r.i. भवन परिसर की आधारशिला 1923 में रखी गई थी भवन का डिजाइन ब्रिटिश वास्तु विद CG BLOM ने बनाया ,जिसका उद्घाटन 7 नवंबर 1929 को वायसराय लॉर्ड इरविन ने किया था।

FRI के 320 मी लंबे तथा 137 मीटर चौड़ी दो मंजिल मुख्य भवन की नींव 7 एकड़ में है इसका दीक्षा सभागार पूरे एशिया में लकड़ी से निर्मित एकमात्र हॉल है ।जिसकी दीवारों पर शीशम, टिक और रोजवुड की लकड़ी इस्तेमाल की गई है
मुख्य भवन में 6 संग्रहालय हैं भवन में 18000 काश नमूनों के साथ एक कास्ट संग्रहालय भी है जिसमें विश्व के सबसे हल्की और सबसे भारी कास्ट नमूने हैं
वर्तमान में FRI के अधीन 8 संस्थान और 3 केंद्र कार्यरत हैं मानव संसाधन विकास मंत्रालय द्वारा 1991 में वन अनुसंधान संस्थान को विश्वविद्यालय का दर्जा प्राप्त हुआ।

FRI Forest Research Institute Dehradun 1906
The Forest Research Institute in Dehradun has a unique identity in the field of forestry. In 1864, India's first Inspector General of Forests, Dr. Dietrich Brandeis was appointed on his advice. In 1878, the country's first Forest College was established in Dehradun. . In 1884 it was named Imperial Forest School, this school was renamed as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906. Due to the increasing work of the Institute, in 1914 it was shifted to 47 acres of Chand Bagh with office and office. The laboratory was made and transferred. Currently f.r.i. FRI's 320 m long and 137 m wide two-storey main building has a 7-acre foundation. Its Diksha Auditorium is the only hall made of wood in Asia. The walls are made of rosewood, tick and rosewood.
The main building houses 6 museums The building also houses a cast museum with 18000 cast specimens containing the world's lightest and heaviest cast specimens
Presently 8 institutes and 3 centers are functioning under FRI. Forest Research Institute got the status of University in 1991 by Ministry of Human Resource Development.
